Miss Long Island, Miss Long Island Teen Pageants

Thirty-seven of Long Island’s most beautiful and accomplished young women competed today for the coveted titles of Miss Long Island and Miss Long Island Teen 2014 and the two winners will advance to Donald Trump’s New York USA 2014 Pageant in January.

Michelle Medoff of Great Neck was crowned Miss Long Island 2014. Levittown's Michelle Ocampo was second runner up. Sabrina Franza of Oceanside was selected Miss Long Island Teen 2014. Paulina Renda, of Wantagh, was third runner up Miss Long Island Teen 2014 and first runner up Miss Teen Photogenic.

The National Council of Jewish Women Peninsula Section was recently recognized for providing children, many of whom were affected by SuperStorm Sandy, with back to school supplies at no cost.

Beachy Fun for Sandy Families

After being displaced from their homes in the aftermath of SuperStorm Sandy, 37 Long Beach families are enjoying the beach once again through the generosity of the East School Children’s Need Fund.

Creating a Memorial

Residents in Lynbrook and nearby are remembering the short life of Quinn Linzer with purple ribbons tied around trees. After being diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Disease Type A at just 3 months old, Linzer’s family created a to-do list to help her live a lifetime. Linzer passed away last week.

Purple Heart, Bronze Star

Rep. Pete King, R-Seaford, recently presented military medals, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, to Wantagh resident Joseph Galati in recognition of his service in the United States Army during World War II.

From Flipping Burgers to Running the Place

Paul Hendel started working at the Merrick McDonald’s when he was 16 years old. Forty years later, the Lloyd Harbor resident owns and operates 18 McDonald’s locations across Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island — including Rockville Centre, which reopened last week.

A Woman of Distinction

East Meadow's Millie Jones was among 10 women to receive Assemblyman Tom McKevitt's "Woman of Distinction" award. Jones volunteers for numerous East Meadow organizations, including the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, East Meadow United Methodist Church and EMUMC Players Theatre Group. During the holiday season, she volunteers her time at the Nassau University Medical Center holiday party for the children’s unit. Jones is also an active member of the East Meadow Kiwanis and East Meadow Sons of Italy.
