Recycling and reusing have becoming part of your everyday life, as well as cleaner and greener cleaning products and cosmetics. You are looking to something to do around town that will satisfy your itch to do your part to help the environment. Patch scoped out some of the recycling and sustainable events going on around you in the upcoming weeks.

What: Recycling Bin Replacement

Where:  Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation, 1600 Merrick Road, Merrick

When: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Why go: You have been an avid recycler all of your life and your bin is beginning to look a little shabby.

What: Butterflies

Where: Malverne Public Library

When: April 21 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Why go: Having respect for other organisms is a key aspect to living green. Children from kindergarten to fourth grade can learn about how butterflies eat, drink and live. Children can even bring home their own caterpillar.

What: Jones Beach Spring Clean-up

Where: West End, Jones Beach (parking in the construction dock)

When: April 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Why go: The beach is one of Long Island staples and something that we are all proud of. Head down there to help clean it up in conjunction with the Striper Surf Club.

Fee: The Striper Surf Club asks for a donation for the troops. Suggested items to send include cookies, baby wipes, Gold Bond powder, granola, phone cards, coffee, and protein bars.

What: Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale

When: April 23 at 11 a.m.

Where: 3 Brothers Pizza Café, Rockville Centre

Why go: Learn about a different way of life and grab some recipes for food that is without animal products and are just as delicious.

What: The Growing Tree

When: April 23 from 2:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Where: Long Island Children’s Museum, Garden City

Why go: Commemorate the beginning of springtime and the month of Arbor Day as we make trees grow by using eco-friendly fabric scraps and recycled paper.

What: Rockville Centre Earth-Fest

Where: Center for Science Teaching and Learning, Tanglewood Preserve

When: April 30 and May 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why go:  With a dinosaur dig, guided nature walk and an amateur photo contest, there is something for everyone.

Fee: $7 per person, free for children younger than 2.

What: S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) event

Where: Newbridge Road Park, Bellmore

When: Sunday, May 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why go: You have some extra bottles filling up that cabinet under your sink that you need to get rid of.

What: Tree Planting

Where: Your house

When: ongoing

Why: You need more shade, while doing something good for the environment.

Instructions: Write a letter to the town stating that you would like a tree planted in front of your home. If you are approved, there is a fee of $150 for the tree, although the fee is waived for senior citizens that are 62 years of age or older. Pick your tree and viola – a new addition to your yard.
