Barkfest Draws Hundreds of Costumed Canines to East Meadow

Lea Cohen of Franklin Square with "Marshmallow the hot dog cart" captured first place in pet costume contest.

The first annual Nassau Barkfest Sunday drew hundreds of dogs to the Eisenhower dog park in East Meadow.

“It was great to see so many pet owners enjoying our park today and participating in our first annual Nassau Barkfest parade and costume contest,” Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said.

More than 500 canines walked the parade route and competed in a pet costume contest.

Lea Cohen of Franklin Square with "Marshmallow the hot dog cart" captured first place; Jennifer, Tim, Trevor and Jaden Tsang from Bellmore with "Lucy the workout dog" captured second; and Jessica Jambol and her son, Mason, from Smithtown with their “Trick or Treater Dog” grabbed third place.

Mangano and his wife, Linda, were also on hand with their two Dachsunds, Max and Rocky.

In addition to the costume contest and parade rescue groups and animal friendly organizations were on site.

“For many of us our pets are members of our family and this was a great way to enjoy a nice afternoon together at one of our newest dog parks,” Mangano said.
