Application for Proposed Taxi Dispatch Center in East Meadow Withdrawn

Joseph Piscitello, who was planning to purchase the property, said that the withdrawal from the Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals was in the best interest of the community.

The application for a proposed taxi dispatch center on Clearmeadow Drive and Hempstead Turnpike was officially withdrawn from the Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals on Wednesday.

Richard Bivone, the developmental consultant of Joseph Piscitello, who was planning to buy of the property at 2279 Clearmeadow Drive, said that Piscitello believed that the withdrawal was in the best interest of the community after he heard the concerns of residents at a public forum on Monday.

"We thought it was the best thing to do," Bivone said.

During the community meeting at Nassau University Medical Center, residents said that the proposed dispatch center would threaten the safety of their children, increase traffic and bring down the property value of the area.

"We will not go any further," Bivone said. "The contract was cancelled with the seller and is no longer valid."

What do you think about the application for the proposed taxi dispatch center being withdrawn? Tell us in the comments below.

@frank its an open forum, ill speak my mind whenever i please. also who asked you. who are you that i should stay quiet? your no one, so please keep your moronic statements to yourself. as far as the issues concerned the taxi stand s a great idea and the locaton is perfect. to many people are closed minded and think only negativly so nothing will ever be accomplished in this town.

It's a bad location for a taxi stand. Did you and Marianne go to the community meeting? Remember this location was originally a residence and was rezoned for business use later on and now the taxi company wants 2 additional changes to the zoning. Why don't we just rezone the entire neighborhood. Nassau County and the Town did absolutely no planning over the years so now we have businesses intruding into neighborhoods, businesses with almost no parking spaces making it difficult to survive. There are too many commercial properties as is. Even in good times there were many vacant buildings. You should be proud of your neighbors that they took the time out to voice there concerns.

I MUST COMMENT...I HAVE LIVED HERE ON THAT BLOCK FOR 47 YEARS AS DID MY MOTHER & MY GRANDMOTHER...WE ARE THE ORIGINAL'S... iTS ABOUT THE CABS DRIVING CUTTING THROUGH THE NEIGHBOR HOOD IN A RUSH.... not another business as I have read on previous posts... it also has nothing to do with living close to the turnpike ...a diffrent kind of business would be great! We didnt have a problem with Auto Zone with their 18 wheeler using the side roads to cut down every Sunday morning..or Dunkin donuts..its the fact that they would bring unwanted drunks drug addicts hanging in their BIG WAITNG ROOM. So unless you were at the meeting people should be informed before they speak....I would have to say unless you live behind here you dont know what goes on in this part of the neighborhood.
diane October 26, 2012 at 02:02 AM
The meth clinic at the hospital...Walmart drunks... have brought this part of East Meadow down.. They sleep down our side streets on the side of 7-11...all the trash left behind at Walmart..Enough already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have lived in the same house since 1955 we have seen it decline has nothing to do with the neighbors all the trash thats brought in. In the end if they dont live here they don't care....
diane October 26, 2012 at 02:10 AM
One more thing to add... How about the 50 something cars parked down our side strets of all the people who either work or are visiting the hospital park in front of all our homes all day & night so we can't even park our own cars in front of our own homes.. . then it looks like grand central station all hours of the day ..they leave their trash behind,,Again would you like to have stranger's constantly parking in front of your home ..so when you shop you park 2 or 3 houses away with your kids or grocerys? I DONT THINK SO..Leaving you neighborhood you have to pack a lunch somedays just waitng for all the traffic in the morning leaving the neighborhood
marianne krause October 26, 2012 at 02:11 AM
@frank proud ? that at every turn someone has to cause a problem and stop progress. No i think not . Why is it a bad location? and please do not give me that bull about the children someone here suggested Carmen avenue you know where the high school is so the kids aren't really the issue are they? oh that comment about Carmen ave may be on the other forum but it was made
paul October 26, 2012 at 02:11 AM
Where is concern about this. (just asking) Just an FYI: (not sure if it is of any interest to you) > Found this on the TOH website... > 951/12. - 954/12. EAST MEADOW - Callahan's Restaurant Corp., Special > exception to use part of premises for place of public assembly & amusement > (cabaret, live music-indoors & dancing); Special exception for outdoor dining > & special exception for accessory use (outdoor bar & storage); Variance in > off-street parking; Maintain 10' high fence., S/E cor. Hempstead Tpke. & East > Meadow Ave., a/k/a 1964 Hempstead Tpke. (S.E.Q.R. determination not made).... And why should they get this?
paul October 26, 2012 at 02:13 AM
OK. Then why dont you tell us EXACTLY what it is they were asking for. I know, do you?
marianne krause October 26, 2012 at 02:14 AM
Diane your still a newbie to the neighborhood, been here way longer then you your mother and your grandmother and East meadow has gone from a really wonderful place to a less caring , mcmansion owning cut every tree down that ypu possibly can area, and i bet you stood by and said nothing while they built that walmart
Frank T October 26, 2012 at 02:23 AM
Let me get this straight. You are for a sleazy taxi stand and apparently without this business East Meadow is declining. You were against Walmart which is an improvement. Surprisingly I do agree with you about the trees. There seems to be a fear of trees and the leaves they create by a segment of the community.
diane October 26, 2012 at 02:28 AM
Wasnt aware of the Walmart situation or what it has brought to the area..I do know now.. well I was born in 65..My granparents bought the house in 55.. So I quess you have seen it all. if 47 years is a newbie then I quess so.I take great pride in East meadow its all I know...I just hope things get better soon
paul October 26, 2012 at 02:31 AM
Not sure what you mean by better? Why is it sick... There is always change everywhere. Thats life...
diane October 26, 2012 at 02:36 AM
I was at the meeting I was one of the people who cared enough to get things moving .... To find out what they had in store for us.I wanted to be informed before hand. Thanks for Paul for letting me know that there is always change.I want the quality I had growing up thats all.. prob will never happen just wishing
David October 26, 2012 at 02:43 AM
It's just a renewal of variance they already have.
paul October 26, 2012 at 02:44 AM
To Diane: Wishing is cool... ;o) But do not be dissapointed.....
marianne krause October 26, 2012 at 03:00 AM
@Frank whats the diffrence between a "sleazy " taxi stand or the outrageous amount of bars , nail salons( which from time to time are tug and rubs as we have seen in the news of late) or pizza parlors that stay for a month or two no diffrence and really how is it that you see into the future and have decided that it would be a sleazy taxi stand ?
Frank T October 26, 2012 at 02:00 PM
What are tug and rubs?
marianne krause October 26, 2012 at 03:08 PM
@ i'm sure your wife (if your married ) will be glad you asked that question lol its what the kids refer to when they are talking about nail salons where you get more then just your nails done.
Susan October 26, 2012 at 03:48 PM
Never heard of those at nail salons. Thought that was a message parlor thing, those "happy endings". All the nail places I've been to have been just that, nail places.
Charles October 26, 2012 at 05:46 PM
Wow!! I can not believe how everyone is acting. @Dianne! Absolutely correct!!! My friend & family resides towards the school and people come cutting through all the time. Can you imagine the clutter-F#%^ clear meadow would become once cabs are familiar with those back streets!!! These people above ranting about EM are clueless about the concerns! It's not the business, it's the F'ing LOCATION!!! I'll say it for a 5th time, Rita's Italian Ice is perfect for a cab stand!!! It'll service the 3 bars and hospital.. GEEZzzz!! As for Paulina and his Aliases, get a life. You speak how you type and you fooled no one but yourself!!! Lmao To answer you Paulina, because they are a Bar in the middle of a parking lot you DB!!! Callahan has been there for decades!!! What did you just move to EM!!! Yeah Paulina, treat people how you want to be treated!! Now I treat you like a DB you are!! I moved to East Meadow in 1976, I've seen the changes and for the most part you can thank Kate Murray administration for the decline in EM. Where are the Islanders going in 3 years??? Oh yeah Brooklyn!!! What's a Tug n Rub? ;)
Charles October 26, 2012 at 05:53 PM
It's what Paulina does after he posts on Patch!!!! Rotflmfao!!!!
Susan October 26, 2012 at 06:20 PM
The Patch needs a "Like" button like Facebook has. One thing though is that the Rita's Ices place is not available as of yet.It really is a perfect location for a taxi dispatch but it is still tied up in the whole Sonic thing. That issue hasn't been settled yet to my knowledge.
Charles October 26, 2012 at 08:33 PM
@Susan I'm not 100% sure but I believe the Sonic deal is off the table. Many opposed Sonic's request for the Contruction of a larger building & allocated parking. Rita's would be ideal if All season would consider. I'd support the taxi stand even if the owners of Zac & Aura opposed. Which I know personally, will oppose. One in particularly doesn't want to lose parking spots.
Susan October 26, 2012 at 08:50 PM
Charles, the Spenser's (Sonic's owners) have not pulled the deal yet as far as I know. Those meetings I did attend. Yes, everyone knows that the variances they asked for were turned down but if you've really been following the story, no final decisions have been made. They can always resubmit different plans. I really doubt that the owner's of Aura and Zachary's (same owners) would oppose a taxi stand asking for 10 parking spaces. They lived with Rita's there for years. They used parking spaces too. Any new business that went in that space is entitled to parking spaces. A taxi dispatch would probably help their business by making it easier for those who don't drive to go there. Their ride home would be right there but who knows what goes through their minds.
paul October 26, 2012 at 09:03 PM
To Charles: The Sonic deal is not off the table.... Only the small minded opposed. And the I need all the parking spots and I have an over occupancy in my club owner too...
Charles October 27, 2012 at 02:49 AM
Thank you for clarifying that Susan and Paul. I don't believe the clubs are over capacity Paul. I frequent both because I know many who work there and the working partners. Parking spaces is a major issue for Aura, however, I agree with the safety aspect of cabs being readily available in that lot. There has been many evenings I've seen people stumble from the bar and into a car. It's scary!!
Charles October 27, 2012 at 03:00 AM
Also, Rita's closed before the club even started filling up. There was never a conflict of interest with Rita's. Sonic however would have been open until 2-4am knowing club had potential customers.
paul October 27, 2012 at 03:10 AM
There are always cabs available at this location as well as other locations where alcohol is served. That is not a new concept... The person would still need to have a cab summoned and willing to get in it. A taxi stand in that lot is not a good business decision. The hospital and jail operate 24/7 and is where the need would be for a taxi/car service stand or depot..... Not blocks away....... To those who say oh my gosh the cars will be driving through Clearmeadow drive, guess what, a cab going to the hospital is not a new concept. Either they drive there now or go another route........ To many turns and curvy streets to be a direct route from where-ever...... If the plans for that site on Clearmeadow, oops I mean Hempstead Turnpike, were actually read and deciphered it may not be a bad as one has been guessing. It would be an asset to the hospital, its workers and visitors etc..... It is just up the block..... Where is the issue???
Susan October 27, 2012 at 03:14 AM
And you are wrong about that too. There were very definite hours of operation planned and they did not include early morning hours. Did you ever even attend a meeting about Sonic? Where are you getting this 'info' from??
paul October 27, 2012 at 03:21 AM
To Charles: OK now we know you are friends with Mr. Aura/Zachery... There was no major conflict for hours of operation.... You mean to tell me that within the proper lot where Aura is located and the other side near Homedepot (club goers already park there) that he does not have enough spots. Pa'lease...... You really know less than I thought......
