#69- Stay Afloat All Year Long

Swimming is not just a summertime endeavor.

Even though the first chills of fall have whipped through the air in the past few days, there's no reason to give up swimming as indoor water options exist in East Meadow.

Saf-T-Swim is one resource for all types of swimming classes. From two months of age through adult, there's an activity for you to try or a lesson for you to learn at this aquatics establishment. For plenty of attention to the swimmer's individual strengths and abilities, enroll yourself or your child in one-on-one lessons, where you'll learn the basics of swimming, but also how to save yourself if you should fall into the water.

Have two or more children who are around the same age and operating at the same swimming level? Consider either the semi-private (two students, one instructor) or the group (four students, one instructor) lessons. The instructor will gear the lessons toward both or all children and help them to become better swimmers. If you're not quite ready for your little one to leap into the water without you, sign up for the Cuddles and Strokes program, designed for children ages 2-3. You'll help your child in his or her development of muscle strength, coordination and swimming movements.

Once kids are really involved in the swimming program and have really excelled in their lessons, consider letting them join the swim team, designed for individuals from 4-14 years old who are able to swim one length of the pool both freestyle and backstroke.

So far, the described programs have been very "kid centered." However, if you want to stick with a course that is strictly for adults, look into the hydro-aerobics program. This program is specifically designed for individuals who are not able to exercise on land due to physical problems and limitations. In addition to getting a workout in a cool environment, you'll be able to connect with some other adults from the community.

Another option for swimming lessons is the Eisenhower Park Aquatic Center. Registration for fall classes began on Aug. 15, so head on over if you're interested in any of the following programs. The Aquatic Center really divides up their programs so that children are absolutely kept at the speed they are comfortable with and at the potential of which they are capable. There are specific programs for infants and toddlers and then different levels for the 3-5 year range, 6 to teenager range, youths with disabilities and special needs, teenagers and adults.

This center has water aerobics classes too. Current classes include aquaerobics, dance aquaerobics, aqua arms and abs, joint efforts, aquajog and hydrosculpt.
