Stop & Shop, United Water and Citizens Campaign for Environment Announces Launch of Pilot Plan for Stop & Shop Pharmacy Customers Which Will Protect the Nassau County Water Supply from Improper Disposal of Unwanted Household Medicines

Henning, Sr. Vice President of United Water, Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for Environment and Arlene Putterman, Manager of Public and Community Relations of Stop & Shop's NY Metro Division, announced the launch of a new pilot program designed to assist in the protection of Nassau County’s water supply from contamination caused by improper disposal of common family medications.

Whether flushed away, washed down the sink or thrown into the garbage, medications can contaminate surface and groundwater supplies.  A new effort for safe disposal through consumer awareness will be introduced in Nassau County as pharmaceuticals, even at small concentrations, can impact human health and/or aquatic organisms.

United Water will provide Stop & Shop customers with free pre-addressed, postage paid envelopes which they can fill with expired or unwanted medications.  All the customer will have to do is drop the envelope into the nearest mailbox to ensure safe disposal.

The pilot program will initially launch in seven Nassau County Stop & Shop pharmacies located in Carle Place, Farmingdale, Hempstead, Hicksville, North Bellmore, Port Washington and Woodbury.
