Hannon Legislation Encourages Organ Donations

“I continually stress the importance of becoming a donor, because donating an organ is saving a life,” said Senator Kemp Hannon, R-Garden City.  “This bill will make the process of registering for organ donation online more convenient by allowing donors to receive electronic confirmation of their registration and amend or revoke registration online.”

Currently, the State Department of Health is authorized to offer online electronic registration, which is done through the DMV website.  This legislation will allow a notice of successful registration to be sent via electronic mail.  It will also allow the use of an electronic signature to amend or revoke consent.

“More than 110,000 people, almost 10,000 of them New Yorkers, are on the national waiting list for organ transplants,” said Hannon.  “An average of 18 people die each day in the United States because they did not receive a desperately needed organ – this bill will make it easier for New Yorkers to become organ donors, and allow even more people to be able to give the precious gift of life that is organ donation.”

The legislation, Senate bill 6972, has already passed the Assembly, and will be sent to the Governor for his approval.
