Kiwanis Elects New Executive Officers and Directors

Debbie Kirsh elected as President of the East Meadow community service organization.

East Meadow resident, and mother of two, Debbie Kirsh will continue a longstanding tradition of helping the community -- as the newly elected President of East Meadow’s Kiwanis club. “I love this club, I love this community, and I am looking forward to leading the club,” said Kirsh, a seven-year member, noting that she is “only the third woman president of the club.” Kiwanis held its annual elections on Tuesday evening, where new members of the Executive Board and Board of Directors were elected. Board of Directors members hold a three-year term, according to current East Meadow Kiwanis President Mitchell Allen. “We basically are rotating every year with three individuals,” he added. New Officials Elected to EMFD

Fire officials are excited about the upcoming year, despite a recent devastating loss to the department.

Yet another election year for the officers and members of the East Meadow Fire Department has passed as chief and company officers continue their plans on what they will accomplish to make their mark in the history of our organization. This years change of office took on a different meaning as officers and members alike paid tribute to newly elected 1st Lieutenant Robert P. Priest of Engine Company 1, who passed away suddenly on April 10. A true sign of the fabric of which our organization is knitted, our department stood side by side for three days, displaying their best in laying a brother to rest. Becker Kicks Off Campaign for Rematch Against McCarthy

The Nassau County Legislator lost in 2010 to the Democratic incumbent.

Nassau County Legis. Francis Becker recently announced that he will seek a congressional bid to New York's 4th district, two years after losing to Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy in 2010. The Lynbrook resident still needs to gain the Republican nomination for the election - Becker will square off against Frank Scaturro, whom he defeated in 2010 for the nomination. Party primary elections are scheduled for June 26. “The overwhelming support I’ve received during the petitioning period has been tremendous. James Surless Seeks Re-Election for Fire Commissioner

The East Meadow resident has been part of the EMFD since 1964.

East Meadow resident James M. Surless is running unopposed in hope of serving a fourth term as Commissioner of the East Meadow Fire Department as elections commence on Dec. 13. Surless, 69, has lived in East Meadow since 1963, and in his 48 years with the EMFD, he has served as Lieutenant, Captain, Chief and Commissioner. He has served in his current post since 1996. "He is whole-heartedly supported by the entire department," Chief Carl Pugliese said. One concern in past elections has been the turnout, and Surless urges residents to head down to the polls. Election 2011: Gonsalves Wins 13th LD Seat, Ready for Eighth Term

East Meadow resident Norma Gonsalves has been at her post for 14 years.

Norma Gonsalves, R-East Meadow, has been reelected as legislator of Nassau County's 13th District, according to unofficial results from the Nassau County Board of Elections. With 100 percent of districts reporting, Gonsalves received 5,883 votes, while Patricia Maher, D-East Meadow, obtained 4,709 votes and Joseph Spinola, WF-East Meadow, garnered 741 votes. "I had faith in the voters, and they had faith in me," Gonsalves said. "They thought I deserved another term to carry on the work that I have done over the past 14 years." Gonsalves is now entering her eighth term as legislator. Election 2011: Murray Defeats Port for Town Supervisor

Republican incumbent will serve another two-year term.

Incumbent Republican Kate Murray easily defeated Democratic challenger Gary Port Tuesday for the Hempstead Town Supervisor seat. Murray captured 66.84 percent of the total vote against the non-incumbent, Port. "I want to thank all of the residents of Hempstead Town who exercised their right to vote in this election," Murray told Patch. "I am grateful for the support I have received, and I am eager to work with all of the members of Hempstead Town's family to deliver upon Team Murray's campaign motto of 'freezing taxes, helping people.'" Hempstead Town Responds to Claims About Senior ID Cards

Town says no medication information is included on the ID cards.

Hempstead Town officials responded Monday afternoon to claims made by Steve Anchin, the Democratic candidate for Hempstead Town Clerk, about the town's senior ID program. The town, along with Town Clerk Mark Bonilla, announced in early October that it had begun offering free identification cards for senior citizens. Last week, Anchin claimed that the ID cards were "dangerous" due to ever-changing medication and prescription information. But the Town of Hempstead responded Monday by saying that no such information exists on the ID cards, specifically for that reason. GOP head Joe Mondello introduced the crowd to all of the candidates in supervisor, legislator, judge and council races.

Thursday night was rally night for the Republicans running for positions in County and Town governments across Nassau. The rally took place at Levittown Hall in Hicksville. GOP chair Joseph Mondello introduced the candidates to the Republican constituents. Many of the candidates, as well as Republican leaders not up for election, spoke in an effort to rally their supporters in an effort to get a significant turnout for Tuesday's elections.
