Pedestrian Struck on Hempstead Turnpike

A perimeter was established, as the police described the injuries sustained to be serious.

A woman was struck by a red 2008 Chevy Cobalt while walking south across Hempstead Turnpike at the Newbridge Road intersection at about 8:15 p.m. on Sunday.

The woman, whose identity was not released by police but is said to be in her mid-60s, was unresponsive at the accident scene before an ambulance transported her to the , police said. The extent of her injuries is not yet known. 

The female driver of the Cobalt, who wished to remain anonymous, alleged that the woman crossed south on Hempstead Turnpike while the traffic light was green, and the accident occurred as she was heading west across Newbridge Road on Hempstead Turnpike.

"I was going between 30 to 40 miles per hour," the driver said. "She was wearing all black and I couldn't see her."

The driver added that the woman rolled up on the hood of the car and smashed into the windshield, which was the only part of the car that suffered extensive damage.

Police said that when a perimeter is established at the scene, it usually means that the injuries could be considered serious.

Third Precinct police officers set up flares and diverted traffic away from the scene. Traffic was backed up west of Newbridge Road.
