Nassau County Ambulance Collides With Van in East Meadow

A total of 13 people were injured at the intersection of East Meadow Avenue and Front Street.

A Nassau County ambulance was involved in a collision with a passenger van at the intersection of East Meadow Avenue and Front Street Sunday evening.

According to the East Meadow Fire Department, at approximately 7 p.m., the van, which may have had up to 10 people in it, was struck on its side by the ambulance. East Meadow fire officials said it was unclear whether or not the ambulance was on active duty while traveling through the intersection.

According to fire officials, 13 total people required aid after the accident for what were described as "non-serious" injuries. Nine adults and three children were transported to the Nassau University Medical Center, while one other person was treated at the scene.

Mutual aid ambulances from Uniondale, Wantagh, Levittown and North Bellmore were requested to the scene by the East Meadow Fire Department because it was unclear how many injuries there were at first, fire officials said.

Nassau County Police refused to comment on the accident.

Does it really matter how old the people were in the van? How about WHY THE #$%^& WERE THERE THAT MANY PEOPLE IN THERE??? The last time I checked that van only had 8 seat belts at the most.

How ironic. One of the Nassau County ambulance trucks on its way to respond to this accident almost rear-ended us yesterday on Hempstead Turnpike, going at a very high speed, and not giving us enough time to move over to let them through. Perhaps responders should have better training, so as not to endanger the lives of other people on the streets.

Hey Denny, don't worry, we will make sure when we get a call for a fire or medical emergency at your house, we will be sure to take our time, not go through any red lights, not pass anyone, and follow the speed limit.. . . . . .

or maybe people that are on the road know how to respond to lights and sirens coming up behind them. Most people pull to the left or go into oncoming traffic. Ever been behind the wheel of an emergency vehicle going to a very stressful call trying to navigate through all the morons on the road? Do you know the extensive amount of training these guys have before they go on the road? No I am sure you dont.

Why so many emergency vehicle accidents lately? Fire trucks, unmarked police cars, police cars, private and public hospital ambulances keep colliding with individual cars. Why? Are the emergency drivers not being properly trained? Is it the clogging of lanes that prevents drivers from moving aside to let the emergency vehicles in? Are people not moving over? Also why are so many people jaywalking and not getting ticketed on Merrick Ave. and on Front St.? Yesterday a gang of youths walked across the lanes of traffic by Waldbaum's to the 7 Eleven disregarding the walker's legal path and disregarding the green light to drivers. They were not ticketed, not stopped, and thank God they had me driving towards them, because I am the ultimate "safe driver"...anyone could have mowed them down. It seems there is anarchy on the East Meadow roads!

Karen,

It seems like those "kids" just didn't care what anybody else thought and did what they wanted. Seems like a lot of kids have that kind of attitude nowadays. Go parents!
