John Russo, an East Meadow resident and head baseball coach at Hofstra University, recently signed a long-term contract.

Just three years after John Russo joined the school's baseball staff as head assistant, he was named the head coach.

"I am honored to be given the opportunity to lead the Hofstra Baseball Program,"  Russo said. "With this honor comes great responsibility and obligation."

"I am thrilled that Coach Russo will continue to lead our baseball program," Jeffrey Hathaway, vice president of Hofstra University and director of athletics said. "John did a wonderful job leading the team to unprecedented heights last season and we look forward to continued academic and athletic success under his leadership in the years to come."

As the 14th head coach in program history, Russo is coming off a 2012 season in which he led the team to a school record of 34 wins and the second seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship with a 20 to 10 conference mark.

Russo and his family relocated to East Meadow from Illinois when he took the job at Hofstra.

"Winning baseball games must not come at the expense of the mission, principles and goals of this great academic institution," Russo said. "It is my obligation to recruit upstanding young men that will excel on the athletic field and in the classroom.
