East Meadow Resident Co-Authors New Book

With her new book, I Get It! I Get It! Dr. Loraine Alderman has a specific goal in mind — to help children and adults understand those affected with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD).

Alderman, a resident of East Meadow, is a licensed clinical psychologist and certified school psychologist who works with school children in New York City having auditory based learning problems, learning disabilities and emotional disturbances. She is also the mother of a college student with an APD.

The children’s picture book is about one boy’s journey and triumph with APD. With its colorful illustrations, this book brings to life John’s journey from confusion to understanding, good self-esteem and figuring it out from a child’s point of view.

“Most people with auditory processing disorder have a low self esteem because they’re so used to misinterpreting things the wrong way and not getting it,” Alderman said. “Children and adults then feel like they’re not smart when they really are smart.”

For Alderman, who worked in hospitals before getting into the school system, she felt the urge to help children with APD overcome their self-esteem issues. As part of the Long Island Authors Group, Alderman and co-author Yvonne Capitelli, a Rockville Centre resident, combined their passions to come up with the new book, which is Alderman’s second.

“They are smart and they can get it,” Alderman said about children with APD. “People need to work with them a certain way.”

This book is not only for children. There is a glossary of terms in the back of the book to aid with understanding. Also, in the appendix, there is a list of resources for parents to use.

“This book can help everyone,” Alderman said. “There isn’t anything out there like this.”
