East Meadow Lacrosse Drops Nail Biter to Calhoun

The Jets had an early lead, but Calhoun came back to steal the win.

The Calhoun girl’s lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season on the road against East Meadow on Wednesday afternoon. The Colts (1-2) came back from an early deficit to pick up the win over the Jets (1-3), 14-12.

Ava Fitzgerald led Calhoun with an outstanding game, picking up six goals and four assists in the win. Ryan Meyer led East Meadow with four goals on the afternoon.

East Meadow started off quickly, jumping out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Meyer, Megan Cleary and Emily Fitzsimmons.

Calhoun responded by scoring seven of the next eight goals in the game, including three from Fitzgerald and two from Deandrea Hanna to take a 7-4 lead late in the first half.

Leading 7-5 at halftime, East Meadow picked it up on the offensive end early in the second half, coming out to score three early goals. Calhoun kept a narrow edge as they led 9-8 with just a few minutes remaining.

Ellie Rosenblum put in a goal to start a three-goal run and push the Calhoun advantage to 12-8. Still down by four with just under four minutes remaining, East Meadow scored two straight goals from Jessica Widmann and Jenna Borresen, but Calhoun held on in the end to put out the big two-goal win.

Heroes: Ava Fitzgerald collected a new season-high in goals with six and amassed 10 total points as she worked with ease through the East Meadow defense.

“We played really well transition on the run and breaking to the run,” Fitzgerald said. “We were able to read the other team and I just attacked when I could and passed it off when it was right.”

Turning Point: After East Meadow started the game off quickly, Calhoun stormed back to take a three-goal lead of their own before the halftime whistle. The big comeback pushed momentum to the Calhoun side for the remainder of the game.

Quotable: “The girls need to work on finishing off plays and getting the loose balls in the future,” Calhou  head coach James Raucci said. “Deandra on the draw changed the game, giving us extra possessions which was huge and Ava working the midfeild helped a lot.”

“I thought we did a good job in the beginning but then made some mistakes and didn’t win the necessary grounds balls and didn’t step up on defense in the end, but overall e played pretty well,” East Meadow head coach Colleen Mcmahon said.

Bottom Line: After Calhoun lost a heartbreaking game to Kellenberg in double overtime over the weekend, the win over East Meadow should boost the Colts for the beginning of their schedule. East Meadow could not pick up their second win in a row after dropping their first two games of the season to Massapequa and Syosset.

Key Stat: The 14 goals for Calhoun and 12 for East Meadow were both season highs for team goals this season.
