East Meadow Kiwanis Raises Money to Eliminate Tetanus

The organization is participating in a Kiwanis International and UNICEF project.

The East Meadow Kiwanis has teamed up with Tupperware to benefit the Eliminate Project, an initiative by Kiwanis International and UNICEF, to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus, a deadly disease that kills more than 60,000 babies and women around the world each year.

Proceeds of the Kiwanis' Tupperware sales will go towards the the project.

Tetanus is a disease caused by a bacterial infection that can cause severe muscle spasms and seizures.

According to the UNICEF website, women in developing counties with lack of health care resources and who give birth in unsanitary conditions, put themselves and their newborn babies at risk of contracting the disease. The bacteria can pass through the umbilical cord when cut, infecting both the mother and the baby.

To benefit the project, items can be purchased on the Tupperware website here.
